It's nice to see Spike getting some character development especially his relationship with Rarity maturing. In previous episodes, this relationship was one sided. It's not a full blown love thing between the two but it is definitely a step up and acknowledgement of Spike's crush for Rarity. It has been hinted before that Spike is a bit greedy when it comes to gems and even the greed for gems and shiny objects in other more mature dragons. This time it's shown that when left unchecked, a dragon's greed can turn them into monsters. I don't want to say it's a handicap or a weakness in dragons but more of a path. I can see Spike and his friends fighting against this path as he gets older and mature. Spike did wreak havoc and none of his friends did anything significant to stop him. Ultimately, it's himself and his love for Rarity that brought him back to a more favorable path. All he has to do is remember all the good things he's done in the past and he turns back into the Spike everyone loves. He learns a lesson at the end thus adding another thing he can recall if he decides to turn to the dark side again.
Oh, those poor Wonderbolts, they were used for humor.
